Advent Conspiracy

For several years our church has taken part in a movement called Advent Conspiracy. Advent is the time of the year where we can actually pull back from the hustle and bustle of the holiday and focus on Christ first coming as a babe in a manger and on the fact that Christ is coming again as our ruling King.

Unfortunately Christmas has become a time of increased commercialism and consumerism. If we are not careful we will totally miss the meaning of Christ’s birth. If we are not intentional we can actually find ourselves worshiping less and spending more — which in turn results in us actually giving less and struggling more. Advent Conspiracy is an effort to change those patterns.

Imagine that you are in a foreign country. Imagine that you are alone without your family. Imagine that you have left behind every thing you own. Imagine that you cannot afford bus fare so you have to walk over 20 miles or hitchhike to a larger city so you can beg on the weekends for money. We have the opportunity to significantly change people’s lives both physically and spiritually.

For 2018 we will be partnering with the Care for Catania Ministry. Care for Catania exist for the purpose of starting a discipleship movement among Muslim-background refugees on the island of Sicily, teaching them to follow Jesus and all of his commands. We have an opportunity to partner with the Care for Catania Ministry to launch a bicycle program at the new Refugee Center.

To start this program, a new facility must be refurbished, tools must be purchased, and used bicycles and parts must be sourced and prepared for fixing and selling inexpensively. Our Advent Conspiracy Goal is $10,000. These funds will be used for tools as well as the initial purchase of used bicycles, parts and locks.

This program will provide the refugees with greater independence and improve their technical and business skills. Paul and Kate Keller will be leading the program. The refugees will have the opportunity to have a bike inexpensively built, repaired, and maintained by other refugees under the help of the Kellers and others with the skills to assist them.
